Chantix use has been linked to several rare but dangerous side effects. Chantix side effects include:
- Seizures
- Heart rhythm disturbances
- Vision problems
Chantix Side Effects: Seizures
A recent study conducted by the Institute for Safe Medication Practices, a medical safety group, revealed that a seizure is a serious side effect linked to Chantix use. The Institute studied 988 adverse event reports the FDA received from Chantix users. The study reported that 86 Chantix users suffered seizures.
Currently, there is no scientific evidence that seizures are a Chantix side effect, however, there is some evidence that Chantix use may lead to seizures. Seizures are abnormal electrical discharges in the brain. Seizures may be caused by prescription medications that affect the brain’s nerve cells. Chantix blocks the brain’s receptors, which may affect the brain’s nerve cells. Scientists continue to study Chantix to determine if seizures are a side effect.

Chantix Side Effects and Pilots
In May 2008, The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) banned pilots and air traffic controllers from using Chantix because Chantix was linked to severe side effects. The FAA based the ban on the Institute for Safe Medication Practices Report that linked Chantix use to seizures. The FAA also ordered the estimated 150 pilots and 30 air traffic controllers using Chantix to wait 72 hours before returning to work, allowing Chantix’s side effects to wear off. The FAA determined that Chantix cannot be used among persons that operate or navigate an aircraft because Chantix side effects may cause a sudden loss of consciousness, leading to numerous serious injuries and deaths.
Chantix Side Effects and Driving
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices Report links Chantix side effects to dozens of automobile accidents. The report prompted the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a division of the Department of Transportation (DOT), to prohibit issuing new truck licenses to drivers using Chantix. The FMCSA is responsible for truck drivers’ safety and Chantix caused an increased risk of seizure and vision problems.
Chantix Side Effects: Heart Rhythm Disturbances
Reports reveal that heart rhythm disturbances are rare but serious Chantix side effects. The FDA received 988 adverse event reports from Chantix users including 224 reports of heart rhythm disturbances. In some reports, the heart rhythm disturbances led to cardiac arrest.
