In a health alert issued on October 28, 2008, the FDA stated that, over the last three years, it has received more than 1,000 reports from nine surgical mesh manufacturers of complications that were associated with surgical mesh devices, including Bard Avaulta mesh, used to repair Pelvic Organ Prolapse (POP) and Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI). One of the Bard Avaulta mesh complications most frequently reported to the FDA was erosion through the vaginal epithelium, the thin lining covering the vaginal wall.

Causes of Bard Avaulta Mesh Erosion Through Vaginal Epithelium

One way Bard Avaulta Mesh may begin to erode through the vaginal epithelium is if a patient suffers some trauma during insertion of the mesh. Examples of trauma that may occur during insertion of Bard Avaulta mesh include bowel, bladder and blood vessel perforation.

Severe infections, which are another Bard Avaulta mesh complication, can also lead to Bard Avaulta mesh erosion through the vaginal epithelium.

Treatment of Bard Avaulta Mesh Erosion Through Vaginal Epithelium

Treatment of Bard Avaulta mesh erosion through the vaginal epithelium may require additional surgical procedures (some of them to remove the Bard Avaulta mesh), IV therapy, blood transfusions, and drainage of hematomas or abscesses.

Symptoms & Diagnosis of Erosion Through Vaginal Epithelium

Chronic vaginal discharge and vaginal pain and pressure are the most common presenting symptoms of Bard Avaulta mesh erosion through the vaginal epithelium. While vaginal examination may reveal granulation tissue without overt evidence of erosion, careful examination will reveal mesh material underneath the granulation tissue in most cases.
