Avandia Heart Attacks & Death

Ironically, while Avandia is designed to help prevent deaths from heart attacks in Type 2 diabetics, Avandia may actually contribute to causing Avandiaheart attacks and death. According to a study published by the New England Journal of Medicine in May 2007, Avandia significantly increases the risk of heart attacks and other heart problems that could potentially lead to death. In fact, the study suggests that Avandia may increase the risk of heart attack, which can lead to immediate death, by 43 percent. Additionally, Avandia may increase the risk of death from any cardiovascular illness by 64 percent.

Unfortunately, deaths related to heart complications are already very common in the Unites States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDCP), complications from heart disease, such as heart attacks, are the leading cause of non-injury deaths in the U.S., accounting for almost 700,000 deaths each year. Although medical authorities agree that controlling diabetes helps lower the risk of death from heart attacks, the discovery that Avandia may actually increase the risk of heart attacks means that many patients may have actually increased their chances of death,  simply by trying to do the right thing.

Even worse, evidence is growing that Avandia’s manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, knew its product could cause heart attacks and death years before the information was made public. Although GlaxoSmithKline disputed the New England Journal of Medicine study findings, it acknowledged that its own research found a 30 percent increased risk of heart attacks and death. These studies are alarming because diabetics already have a higher-than-normal risk of heart attacks and death.

FDA Warning about Avandia Heart Attacks and Deaths
Due to the increased risk of heart attacks and death, the FDA has advised that Avandia patients with a history of heart disease speak to their health providers about discontinuing Avandia.
