Accutane may cause a severe side effect known as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). IBD causes inflammation in the stomach, mouth and intestines. IBD has also been linked to Accutane users who had no history of stomach or intestinal problems. IBD will not automatically stop with the discontinued use of Accutane. A serious case of IBD may require ongoing treatment.
IBD symptoms include:
- severe stomach, chest or bowel pain
- troubled or painful swallowing
- heartburn
- fever
- weight loss
- rectal bleeding
- diarrhea

Ulcerative Colitis is when Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) affects the large intestine. Ulcerative Colitis causes inflammation and decay of the inner lining of the large intestine. Ulcerative Colitis causes the whole rectum and large intestine to become swollen leading to symptoms such as diarrhea (that may appear bloody) and abdominal pain.
Accutane Use and Crohn’s Disease
Crohn’s Disease is when the digestive tract becomes inflamed. Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the digestive tract but usually affects the small intestine. Crohn’s disease penetrates and causes the affected organ to swell leading to intense pain and a frequent need to empty the intestine. Crohn’s Disease symptoms may include: abdominal pain, diarrhea, and rectal bleeding.
Link between Accutane and IBD
Accutane warnings state that there is a small possibility that Accutane users will develop IBD. An FDA study reviewed 85 cases of Accutane users who developed IBD and concluded that there is a causal link between Accutane use and IBD. The study measured the probability of Accutane causing IBD:
- In 4 cases there was a high probability
- In 58 cases it was probable
- In 23 cases it was possible
- In none of the cases was it doubtful
IBD and Accutane Litigation
Hundreds of Accutane users diagnosed with IBD have filed lawsuits against Accutane’s manufacturer, Hoffman-LaRoche. The plaintiffs allege that Accutane caused their IBD. There have been multi-million dollar verdicts for plaintiffs demonstrating that juries found a causal connection between Accutane use and IBD. If you or a loved one has developed IBD from Accutane use, please contact us today as you might be entitled to compensation.
