Roopal P. Luhana concentrates her practice on representing consumers in mass tort litigations involving pharmaceutical products, over-the-counter products and medical devices. Ms. Luhana's work in this area began immediately after law school when she clerked for the now retired Honorable Marina Corodemus, who was the Mass Tort Judge of New Jersey.
As a law clerk to Judge Corodemus, Ms. Luhana was responsible for managing thousands of mass tort cases and class actions. Ms. Luhana worked closely with Judge Corodemus to develop case management orders and strategies for efficiently and effectively managing and resolving cases. The significant national litigations that Ms. Luhana worked on as a law clerk included the pharmaceutical drugs Rezulin, Propulsid and PPA, as well as non-pharmaceutical actions such as the highly publicized consumer fraud class action against Cooper Tire and an environmental mass tort action against Ciba Geigy.
Since clerking for Judge Corodemus, Ms. Luhana has served on committees in multi-district litigations involving defective pharmaceuticals and medical devices, including the Discovery Committee in the Guidant federal MDL. Most recently, she has been working closely with partner Eric Chaffin on the firms denture cream litigation and serves as the Chair of the Law & Briefing Committee in the federal denture cream MDL.
Ms. Luhana also works closely with the firm's female clients on important issues related to women's health. For example, she is currently working on cases for women who have suffered severe Yaz side effects and Yasmin side effects such as PEs, DVTs, strokes, heart attacks and gall bladder disease that were caused from the popular birth control pills Yaz and Yasmin. Ms. Luhana is pursuing Yaz lawsuits and Yasmin lawsuits in federal court for these clients. She is also working closely with the firm's female clients and co-counsel on transvaginal mesh injury cases, including cases involving injuries from Gynecare Mesh and Bard Avaulta Mesh.
Ms. Luhana has also litigated significant class actions. She was class counsel in the ETS nationwide litigation that resulted in a settlement of $11.1 million for teaching candidates who were inaccurately scored on PPLT tests. Ms. Luhana also was class counsel in a national consumer fraud action against IBM that resulted in a $35 million settlement for purchasers of defective IBM hard drives.
Ms. Luhana received her Bachelor of Arts in 1998 from Rutgers University, Douglass College in Economics and Political Science, and her J.D. in 2001 from Seton Hall University School of Law, where she was a Merit Scholar.
Ms. Luhana is admitted to practice in the States of New Jersey and New York, the U.S. District Courts for the District of New Jersey, the Southern District of New York and the Eastern District of New York.
