On March 7, 2011, David Floyd, president of Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy ASR unit, announced his resignation from the company. Although a spokeswoman would only state that he is leaving to “pursue interests outside the company,” Floyd is responsible for the division that manufactures the artificial hip replacements that were the subject of a massive DePuy ASR hip recall last August. Since the DePuy ASR recall, the company has faced mounting lawsuits, increased scrutiny, and media attention because of the dangerous adverse events associated with the defective artificial hip implants. Floyd, who has been president of DePuy’s artificial hip division since 2007, will leave the company at the end of March.

Aftermath of the DePuy ASR Recall

The August 26, 2010 DePuy ASR recall was issued after researchers found that 13 percent of patients who received a DePuy ASR artificial hip needed to undergo revision surgery within five years. Approximately 93,000 artificial hip implants were subject to the DePuy ASR recall. The DePuy ASR metal-on-metal implants are particularly dangerous because the artificial hip devices shed tiny particles, which can cause damage to the surrounding tissue or enter the bloodstream, leading to metal poisoning. Since the DePuy ASR recall, Johnson & Johnson took a $280 million charge in the fourth quarter to pay for the recalls and is currently defending more than 500 lawsuits filed by victims who received the defective artificial hip implants. Recently, the FDA announced plans to investigate the safety and effectiveness of metal-on-metal implants.
