On August 26, 2010, Depuy Orthopedics issued a recall of two hip replacement implants due to high early failure rates. The hip replacement implants are artificial joints surgically implanted into patients to replace worn or weakened parts of the hip. Generally, they are used as an alternative to a full hip replacement procedure.  Approximately 93,000 Depuy ASR hip replacement devices have been implanted worldwide.  Depuy, the manufacturer of the hip replacement implants, is owned by Johnson & Johnson.

Metal on Metal Hip Replacement

The two recalled hip replacement products are the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System.  These two hip replacement implants are part of a category of devices known as “metal on metal bearing.”  These metal on metal devices can cause loose metal debris that can lead to inflammation and eventual muscle and soft tissue damage. Other problems with the ASR hip replacement products include poor fit which leads to loosening parts, pain, bone fractures, infection, tissue damage and dislocations. Unpublished 2010 data from the National Joint Registry (NJR) of England and Wales shows that between 12 and 13 percent of patients who received these types of hip replacement implants needed a second surgery within 5 years of receiving the first ASR hip replacement implant. Early failure rates reached about two to three times the industry average.

Early Complaints Concerning ASR Hip Replacement Products

Use of the implants began in the United States in approximately 2003. Since then, health care professionals have increasingly warned about problems related to metal on metal hip replacement devices. The FDA has received about 400 complaints over the last two years reporting failures of these devices. Many of these complaints concerned problems that required additional painful and expensive surgeries to replace the hip replacement implants. The hip replacement recall follows a Federal Drug Administration (FDA) warning letter issued just days earlier regarding DePuy’s sale of hip and other joint products without the agency’s approval. The FDA gave DePuy 15 days to correct the violations.
