On August 26, 2010, Johnson & Johnson issued a recall of two kinds of hip replacement products manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of J&J. The DePuy hip replacement recall came after numerous patients had experienced DePuy hip replacement failures, requiring a second hip replacement. The hip replacement recall includes the recall of two different types of DePuy hip replacement products: the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System, and the DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing System. The DePuy hip replacement recall comes fresh off the heels of several other Johnson & Johnson product recalls, including products such as Children’s Tylenol and Motrin.

Problems with Recalled DePuy Hip Replacements
The DePuy ASR hip replacement products that are being recalled have an unusually high failure rate. Given the particular design of the products, the parts can become loose and fracture the bone around the implant, metal from the implant can flake off and enter the bloodstream and the implant’s ball and socket can become dislocated. Many patients who have received the DePuy ASR hip implant have had to undergo painful surgeries to replace the defective hip implant. Beginning in late 2009, DePuy started to phase out the hip replacements that are now part of the DePuy hip replacement recall. In March 2010, the British MHRA (the British equivalent of America’s FDA) issued an advisory about the DePuy Hip Replacement products leaving metal debris in the area surrounding the hip. For the past several years, numerous medical professionals have noticed that the DePuy hip replacement devices have a higher rate of failure and have stopped using the products.
Since the recall, DePuy president, David Floyd, has acknowledged that the DePuy Hip Replacement Recall will be a concern for patients currently using the device.
Many pharmaceutical industry observers have begun to suggest that there is a systemic problem at DePuy’s parent company, Johnson & Johnson. Earlier this year the United States House of Representatives Oversight Committee held hearings concerning actions taken by Johnson & Johnson in its handling of recalls of other products. Most recently, this has led to the retirement of the president of Johnson & Johnson’s department of consumer products (known as McNeil Consumer Products), Colleen Goggins, on September 16, 2010.
