A recent study published in Diabetes Care concluded that the popular diabetes drug, Actos (pioglitazone), seems to increase a patient’s risk for developing bladder cancer compared to other diabetes medications. Actos, which is manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) in 1999 for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. In September 2010, the FDA initiated an investigation to determine whether long-term Actos use puts patients at an increased risk for developing bladder cancer.

Detailed Findings of Latest Actos Study

The most recent study analyzed data collected by the FDA’s Adverse Event Reporting System. Researchers reviewed 500,000 adverse event reports collected over a five year period, and found that over 20% of all reports of bladder cancer among diabetics involved Actos. Specifically, between 2004 and 2009, there were 93 reported cases of bladder cancer. Of those cases, 31 patients were treated with pioglitazone, which researchers concluded to be “indicative of a definitive risk” of developing bladder cancer. Further, Dr. Elisabetta Poluzzi of the University of Bologna stated that the study suggests that Actos users face a “disproportionate risk” of developing bladder cancer than those treated with other diabetic medications. However, researchers are not sure how Actos actually increases a patient’s risk for bladder cancer. Clearly, further researcher is necessary to determine whether there is a definite causal link between Actos use and bladder cancer. Until the FDA completes its investigation, Poluzzi cautioned that “physicians should pay careful attention to this possible risk.”
